34 Pounds of Cocaine Found at Border in New Mexico

ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico — Thirty-four pounds of cocaine with a street value of more than $1 million were found hidden inside a car that stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
The cocaine was hidden in a compartment underneath the rear section of the car. New Mexico Agents became suspicious when the driver, an American identified as Salvador Martinez, 36, was evasive in responding to questions from the agents.
The cocaine was found on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, New Mexico Border Patrol agents tracked down three vehicles that were carrying 2,102 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $1.6 million. A New Mexico Border Patrol helicopter followed the vehicles as they traveled northbound into the United States on New Mexico highway 338 near Cloverdale, New Mexico.
Agents used tire-deflating devices to stop the vehicles.
Two of the drivers were able to elude arrest and fled back into Mexico. One of them abandoned his truck and fled on foot, while the other was able to drive his vehicle back across the border.
Agents apprehended the third driver, Jose Luis Rubacalba-Ramirez, a 27-year-old citizen of Mexico. The Border Patrol said Rubacalba-Ramirez tried to use his truck to run over an agent.
The Border Patrol also reported finding 940 pounds of marijuana abandoned at various locations in the area of Lordsburg in southwest New Mexico.
Federal authorities also reported this week that nearly 340,000 pounds of narcotics were confiscated in the El Paso, West Texas and New Mexico sectors during the 2003 fiscal year.
